Heavy rains have destroyed the temporary structure hosting internally displaced persons-IDPs in Muhokya camp Kasese district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In December 2020, Kasese District local government and the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) temporarily resettled more than 1,500 persons who were displaced by the floods and landslides in Muhokya Sub-county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The IDPS are now calling for urgent assistance to address the humanitarian needs and to prevent the spread of deadly diseases including cholera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yerusania Mukara the camp vice chairperson says the affected households have now shifted to a temporary classroom structure that was put up by UNICEF early this year for the learning of nursery-going children.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He adds that the displaced people are suffering due to relentless rains and wind battering their temporary homes for the last few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Joy Masika, the secretary for the C-unit in the camp says that pre-primary school-going children have no alternative to continue with their education. She wants the district authorities and partners to urgently aid the construction of a new facility in the camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sylvia Kasusura one of the victims says the nursery facility was a big relief to parents as it acted as a centre for children but also gave time to parents to go and fend for their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She says that further rains could heighten the risk of malaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jetress Musoki another affected person says the heavy rains also destroyed some of her household items. \u00a0She asks the government to expedite the process of permanently resettling them so that their families can once again live in peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eliphazi Muhindi, the LCV Chairperson says they have received interest from persons willing to sell land to the government to permanently resettle the IDPs. He argues that the permanent settlement of the IDPs is the only solution to the challenges they are encountering while in the camp.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
