{"id":30526,"date":"2022-05-19T08:50:38","date_gmt":"2022-05-19T05:50:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=30526"},"modified":"2022-05-19T08:50:39","modified_gmt":"2022-05-19T05:50:39","slug":"rwandan-genocide-fugitive-munyarugarama-confirmed-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2022\/05\/19\/rwandan-genocide-fugitive-munyarugarama-confirmed-dead\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwandan Genocide Fugitive Munyarugarama Confirmed Dead"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A UN tribunal has announced the death of another Rwandan genocide fugitive, who was among the last five accused still at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN&#8217;s Residual Mechanism of International Criminal Tribunals announced on Wednesday that it had determined that Ph\u00e9n\u00e9as Munyarugarama died in 2002 in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irmct.org\/en\/news\/irmct-prosecutor-confirms-death-fugitive-pheneas-munyarugarama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It said in a statement&nbsp;<\/a>that it was able to conclude \u201cfollowing a comprehensive and challenging investigation&#8221; that Munyarugarama \u201cdied from natural causes on 28 February 2002\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Munyarugarama, a former Rwandan military commander, had been charged with eight counts including genocide and crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;For the victims and survivors of Munyarugarama&#8217;s crimes in the Bugesera region, we hope this result brings some closure,&#8221; the tribunal&#8217;s chief prosecutor Serge Brammertz said in the statement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest announcement follows last week\u2019s confirmation by the tribunal of the death of Protais Mpiranya, another top remaining wanted suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 800,000 people were slaughtered in Rwanda, in just 100 days in 1994, by ethnic Hutu extremists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were targeting members of the minority Tutsi community, as well as their political opponents, irrespective of their ethnic origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>BBC News Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A UN tribunal has announced the death of another Rwandan genocide fugitive, who was among the last five accused still at large.
