{"id":30428,"date":"2022-05-17T13:56:21","date_gmt":"2022-05-17T10:56:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=30428"},"modified":"2022-05-17T13:56:29","modified_gmt":"2022-05-17T10:56:29","slug":"sauti-sol-threatens-to-sue-presidential-candidate-raila-odinga-over-copyright-infringement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2022\/05\/17\/sauti-sol-threatens-to-sue-presidential-candidate-raila-odinga-over-copyright-infringement\/","title":{"rendered":"Sauti Sol Threatens To Sue Presidential Candidate Raila Odinga Over Copyright  Infringement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenyan music band Sauti Sol has threatened to sue former Prime Minister Raila Odinga&#8217;s presidential campaign for alleged copyright infringement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Odinga\u2019s social media accounts are said to have used Sauti Sol&#8217;s song Extravaganza as a soundtrack during the unveiling of Martha Karua as the running mate for the Azimio la Umoja Coalition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement posted on Twitter, Sauti Sol decried the use of their music in ongoing political campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They said they were not &#8220;aligned to nor associated with the Azimio la Umoja campaign or any other political movement and\/or party&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are disappointed by the Azimio la Umoja campaign\u2019s blatant disregard of our right to control the use of our copyright.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ODM party, which is part of the Azimio coalition and which Mr Odinga belongs to,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheODMparty\/status\/1526451718975791104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said they appreciated Sauti Sol&#8217;s music, and &#8220;playing their song&#8230;was a show of love for their work&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But some online users have lashed out at the band, pointing out that Mr Odinga\u2019s coalition had paid the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) more than $4,800 in licence fees to use copyrighted musical works in their campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MCSK is a state body that oversees the payment of royalties to artists in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many artists however, including Sauti Sol, have faulted the copyright body on the structure it uses to compensate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sauti Sol is one of Africa&#8217;s biggest male bands and won the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Below is Sauto Sol&#8217;s statement<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"977\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Sauti-Sol-977x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Sauti-Sol-977x1024.jpg 977w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Sauti-Sol-286x300.jpg 286w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Sauti-Sol-768x805.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Sauti-Sol-1465x1536.jpg 1465w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Sauti-Sol-360x377.jpg 360w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Sauti-Sol.jpg 1646w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 977px) 100vw, 977px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kenyan music band Sauti Sol has threatened to sue former Prime Minister Raila Odinga&#8217;s presidential campaign for alleged copyright infringement.
