{"id":30268,"date":"2022-05-09T11:29:53","date_gmt":"2022-05-09T08:29:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=30268"},"modified":"2022-05-09T11:29:54","modified_gmt":"2022-05-09T08:29:54","slug":"dozens-killed-in-dr-congo-gold-mine-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2022\/05\/09\/dozens-killed-in-dr-congo-gold-mine-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Dozens Killed In DR Congo Gold Mine Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dozens of people were killed after armed men raided a gold mine in Djugu in the Democratic Republic of Congo&#8217;s eastern Ituri province on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AFP news agency quotes a local official as saying that 29 bodies had been retrieved from the artisanal mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the dead was a four-month-old baby, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, the ministry of communication blamed the Codeco rebel group for the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The government specifies that this umpteenth barbaric and cowardly act of Codeco terrorists on innocent populations will in no way shake its determination to restore peace,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Com_mediasRDC\/status\/1523437659078918144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the ministry said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The army is working day and night to completely eliminate the armed groups here in Ituri,&#8221; army spokesperson is quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Codeco group has previously been accused of carrying out raids against civilians in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s blamed for killing at least a dozen people at a church in March, and another 60 in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>BBC News Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dozens of people were killed after armed men raided a gold mine in Djugu in the Democratic Republic of Congo&#8217;s eastern Ituri province on Sunday.
