{"id":28974,"date":"2022-02-09T15:51:33","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T12:51:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=28974"},"modified":"2022-02-09T15:52:17","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T12:52:17","slug":"tear-gas-canister-blows-off-medical-students-hand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2022\/02\/09\/tear-gas-canister-blows-off-medical-students-hand\/","title":{"rendered":"Tear Gas Canister Blows off Medical Student&#8217;s Hand"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Richard Ssebuganda, a third year Bio Medical Sciences student has lost his right hand in an explosion of a teargas canister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ssebuganda who is currently in Mulago hospital admitted to the casualty ward is fighting to keep some part of his hand which being amputated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the victim, the unfortunate incident happened yesterday afternoon in his room at Lumumba Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the week started, Makerere University students have been in demonstration against online lectures, which attracted police action involving shooting of tear gas cannisters into halls of residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ssebuganda who reports that he had not taken part of the demonstration explains that he had briefly moved out of his room to pick a visitor who was already with the hall premises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On returning , his visitor noticed there was a canister on Ssebuganda&#8217;s bed which he showed to his host.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is at this point that Ssebuganda carefully picked the cannister only for it to explode towards his chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said; &#8220;When the cannister moved with force towards my chest I instinctively put out my hand to push it away.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time URN visited the hospital, Ssebuganda was distraught, complaining that the hospital had not attended to him throughout the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"719\" height=\"966\" src=\"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Muk.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28977\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Muk.jpg 719w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Muk-223x300.jpg 223w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Muk-360x484.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 719px) 100vw, 719px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8221; The whole night I was here, no medical attention, not given pain killers , my dad had to buy some from outside. I have not eaten since yesterday night.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Micheal Kasaga, Ssebuganda&#8217;s care taker at the hospital expressed regret for his brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The boy is doing a course in Medicine that requires him to practice with his hands!&#8221; he lamented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, the University management represented by the Dean of students who came to check on Ssebuganda this morning is following up on the victims medication. services with the University Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luke Oweyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Spokes Person who acknowledged knowledge of the incident noted that investigations were still underway to establish&nbsp; under what circumstances the incident occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked if it is normal to shoot into the student students&#8217; residences, Oweyesigire replied in the affirmative.&nbsp;&#8220;We usually shoot canisters into rooms where students are demonstrating from once deemed fit,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Ssebuganda, a third year Bio Medical Sciences student has lost his right hand in an explosion of a teargas canister.
