President Yoweri Museveni has said he will not take sides in the Kenyan presidential elections scheduled for 9 August, the state-owned New Vision newspaper reports<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He dismissed allegations that Uganda and the ruling National Resistance Movement Party (NRM) support Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cElections in Kenya or any other African country are a matter of the people of that country. We never take sides in the internal matters of other countries. So, we have no side in the Kenya elections,\u201d Mr Museveni said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Ruto has made several visits to Uganda, including in 2015 when he joined President Museveni on a campaign rally in the eastern town of Kapchorwa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Museveni last year invited Mr Ruto as his chief guest during the launch of a vaccine manufacturing facility in central Wakiso District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In August of the same year, Kenyan immigration authorities blocked Mr Ruto from flying to Uganda for what he had termed a private visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Ruto and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga are seen as front-runners in the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
