{"id":27629,"date":"2021-12-07T15:20:58","date_gmt":"2021-12-07T12:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=27629"},"modified":"2021-12-07T15:22:58","modified_gmt":"2021-12-07T12:22:58","slug":"many-inmates-feared-dead-in-burundi-prison-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2021\/12\/07\/many-inmates-feared-dead-in-burundi-prison-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Many Inmates Feared Dead In Burundi Prison Fire"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many prisoners are feared dead after a fire broke out in the main prison in Burundi&#8217;s capital, Gitega, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Images shared online show bodies of people thought to be prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities in Burundi haven\u2019t yet released any details about the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A journalist from a private media house located near the prison says firefighters entered the prison, but a big part of the facility had already been burnt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a capacity of hosting 400 prisoners, Gitega prison holds 1,539 inmates as of last month, according to the Christian Association Against Torture (ACAT-Burundi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany nurses from Gitega hospital were mobilised and we saw them entering the prison to help,\u201d he told BBC Great Lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A prisoner who survived the fire told the BBC that the fire broke at around 04:00 local time while many inmates were still asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cause of the fire is not yet known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late August, an electric fault caused a fire in a section of the prison, but no casualties were recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>BBC News Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many prisoners are feared dead after a fire broke out in the main prison in Burundi&#8217;s capital, Gitega, on Tuesday.
