Col Mamady Doumbouya has been sworn is as Guinea’s interim president after leading a coup which saw the overthrow of Alpha Cond\u00e9.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former French legionnaire, 41, becomes Africa’s second-youngest leader, after Mali’s Assimi Go\u00efta, 38, who also staged a military takeover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Col Doumbouya is barred from contesting future elections under plans to restore civilian rule announced this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 5 September coup has been widely condemned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both West Africa body Ecowas and the African Union have suspended Guinea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ecowas also imposed sanctions against the coup leaders and demanded a return to constitutional order within six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the Mohammed V palace in Conakry, the new president said his mission was to “refound the state” by writing a new constitution, tackling corruption, changing the electoral system and putting in place “free, credible and transparent” elections, according to the AFP news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also promised to “respect all the national and international commitments to which the country has subscribed”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guinea’s military junta has not specified how long it would take to organise elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it says anyone taking part in the interim government, which will have a civilian prime minister, will be barred from standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The military coup leaders detained Mr Cond\u00e9, 83, after their takeover, with Col Doumbouya assuring French media<\/a> he was with them in a “safe place.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His exact whereabouts remain unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before his rise to power the colonel maintained a low profile, but what makes him stand out is his international military experience, according to West Africa Political Analyst Paul Melly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The colonel trained in France and served in the French military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his 15-year military career, Col Doumbouya served in missions in Afghanistan, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Central African Republic and close protection in Israel, Cyprus, the UK and Guinea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guinea’s new leader is friends with his fellow coup mastermind in Mali – President Go\u00efta, according to news website Africa Guinea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same site reports that in 2018, the two military men crossed paths in Burkina Faso during a training session organised by the US army, which was reserved for the region’s special forces commanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
