{"id":25159,"date":"2021-07-19T10:59:12","date_gmt":"2021-07-19T07:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=25159"},"modified":"2021-07-19T10:59:14","modified_gmt":"2021-07-19T07:59:14","slug":"zuma-corruption-trial-resumes-today-after-deadly-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2021\/07\/19\/zuma-corruption-trial-resumes-today-after-deadly-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"Zuma Corruption Trial Resumes Today After Deadly Protests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The corruption trial of South Africa&#8217;s jailed ex-President Jacob Zuma resumes on Monday following deadly violence triggered by his imprisonment for contempt of court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is serving a 15-month sentence for failing to appear before a commission investigating corruption allegations during his tenure as president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protests broke out in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal and escalated to looting and arson that spread to the economic hub Gauteng, claiming over 200 lives. Three people have been arrested for allegedly instigating the violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Cyril Ramaphosa said the riots were a &#8220;coordinated and well-planned attack&#8221; and called for calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Monday\u2019s virtual court hearing, Mr Zuma&#8217;s legal team has applied for Chief Prosecutor Billy Downer to recuse himself from the trial for allegedly leaking information to the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are fears that the case will reignite tensions that had eased by the weekend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The corruption trial of South Africa&#8217;s jailed ex-President Jacob Zuma resumes on Monday following deadly violence triggered by his imprisonment for contempt of court.
