{"id":25078,"date":"2021-07-15T19:53:19","date_gmt":"2021-07-15T16:53:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=25078"},"modified":"2021-07-15T19:53:26","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T16:53:26","slug":"africas-covid-deaths-up-43-in-a-week-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2021\/07\/15\/africas-covid-deaths-up-43-in-a-week-who\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa&#8217;s COVID Deaths Up 43% In A Week &#8211; WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Africa has recorded a 43% rise in Covid-19 deaths in the last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is a clear warning sign that hospitals in the most impacted countries are reaching a breaking point,&#8221; the WHO\u2019s Africa director Matshidiso Moeti said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many countries lack oxygen, intensive care units and specialised staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Namibia, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia accounted for most deaths, the WHO said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical staff were urged to use the steroid treatment dexamathasone that can help severely ill patients recover faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drug can cut the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators, and a fifth for those in need of supplemental oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 150,000 Covid-19 deaths have been reported in Africa since the beginning of the pandemic.
