{"id":24683,"date":"2021-06-22T11:23:08","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T08:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=24683"},"modified":"2021-06-22T11:23:09","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T08:23:09","slug":"eu-to-lift-restrictions-on-burundi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2021\/06\/22\/eu-to-lift-restrictions-on-burundi\/","title":{"rendered":"EU To Lift Restrictions On Burundi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Union is in the process of removing financial restrictions on Burundi, the president\u2019s office has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision to lift the ban on restrictions was communicated to Burundi\u2019s president when he met the EU delegates on Monday in the political capital, Gitega, the president\u2019s office&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NtareHouse\/status\/1406918992179126274?s=20\">announced on Twitter.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EU representative in Burundi, Claude Bochu, said that this was &#8220;a starting process to lift the ban on Burundi&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2016, the EU suspended direct financial support to the Burundian government over human rights violations after the unrest that followed the failed coup of 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2020, under President Evariste Ndayishimiye, Burundi has made efforts to restore rights and foreign relations, and had approached the EU to lift the ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But different rights groups on Monday wrote a petition to the EU deploring \u201cwidespread impunity for past and ongoing serious human rights violations\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>BBC News Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Union is in the process of removing financial restrictions on Burundi, the president\u2019s office has said.
