He was 97.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kaunda ruled Zambia from 1964, when the Southern African nation won its independence from Britain, until 1991, and afterwards became one of the most committed activists against HIV\/AIDS in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am sad to inform [members] we have lost Mzee [the old man]. Let\u2019s pray for him,\u201d Kaunda\u2019s son Kambarage said on the late president\u2019s Facebook page on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities declared 21 days of mourning for the liberation hero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn behalf of the entire nation and on my own behalf, I pray that the entire Kaunda family is comforted as we mourn our first president and true African icon,\u201d President Edgar Lungu said in a message on his Facebook page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former president \u2013 affectionately known as KK \u2013 had been feeling unwell and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/6\/14\/zambias-former-president-kenneth-kaunda-admitted-to-hospital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had been admitted<\/a>&nbsp;to the Maina Soko Medical Centre in Lusaka on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Zambia\u2019s copper-based economy fared badly under his long stewardship, Kaunda will be remembered more for his role as an anti-colonial fighter who stood up to white minority rule in Southern African countries such as Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia\u2019s founding president and liberation hero, has died at a military hospital in the capital, Lusaka, where he was being treated for pneumonia.
