{"id":24112,"date":"2021-05-26T16:13:34","date_gmt":"2021-05-26T13:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=24112"},"modified":"2021-05-26T16:13:37","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T13:13:37","slug":"malis-arrested-president-and-prime-minister-resign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/26\/malis-arrested-president-and-prime-minister-resign\/","title":{"rendered":"Mali&#8217;s Arrested President and Prime Minister Resign"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mali&#8217;s interim President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane have officially resigned, according to the AFP news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Ndaw and Mr Ouane have been detained since Monday evening at a military camp outside the capital, Bamako.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer who led last year&#8217;s coup and became vice-president of an interim government, Col Assimi Go\u00efta, accused them of failing in their duties and seeking to sabotage the country&#8217;s transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reports of their resignations come as West African mediators visit the country hoping to organise their release from military detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Coup mediators meet Mali&#8217;s military leaders<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">West African mediators visiting Mali have met the senior military figures who carried out the country\u2019s second coup in less than a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday a military colonel &#8211; who was the vice-president in the transitional government &#8211; accused President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane of sabotaging the transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ecowas team has an extremely difficult mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Led by the former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, it hopes to get the ousted president and prime minister released from military detention as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But beyond that it is not clear what it can achieve now that Colonel Assimi Go\u00efta is running the country and looks set to name a new prime minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ecowas and other international bodies could impose sanctions against those behind the coup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they will be aware that that could further complicate Mali&#8217;s road to elections and the promised return to civilian rule early next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN Security Council is due to discuss the political crisis later on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>BBC News Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mali&#8217;s interim President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane have officially resigned, according to the AFP news agency.
