{"id":23974,"date":"2021-05-20T13:05:17","date_gmt":"2021-05-20T10:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=23974"},"modified":"2021-05-20T13:05:20","modified_gmt":"2021-05-20T10:05:20","slug":"un-security-council-pushes-for-more-covid-vaccine-supply-in-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/20\/un-security-council-pushes-for-more-covid-vaccine-supply-in-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Security Council Pushes For More COVID Vaccine Supply In Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN Security Council is calling for more global assistance to expand Covid vaccine access for African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A text that it unanimously adopted said that Africa had so far received only 2% of the vaccines administered worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It added that there needed to be &#8220;equitable access to quality, safe, efficacious, and affordable Covid-19 diagnostics, therapeutics, medicines and vaccines&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his remarks to the Security Council, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also said that limited supply and insufficient support were undermining recovery in the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Out of 1.4 billion doses administered around the world today, only 24 million have reached Africa \u2013 less than 2%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Equitable and sustainable vaccine roll-out worldwide is the quickest path towards a fast, and fair recovery,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He called for sharing of doses through the global Covax initiative and removal of export restrictions among other measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UN Security Council is calling for more global assistance to expand Covid vaccine access for African countries.
