Uganda’s Justice Department has revealed that it recovered more than shs30bn from the proceeds of crime in the past five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was revealed by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Prof Ephraim Kamuntu during presentation of status report of implementation of the manifesto for the period of 2015\/6 to 2020\/1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It also revealed that it registered 4,129 Corruption related cases, out of which 2,203 Cases were prosecuted at Anti-Corruption Court with a conviction Rate of 55%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“On enforcement of measures for the recovery of proceeds of crime, the ODPP between 2016 to date has so far recovered more than UGX 30 Billion against the total value of court compensation orders issued of more than UGX 90 Billion for government. This translates to 33% recovery,” the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ODPP used plea-bargaining system while handling some cases Corruption cases. This led to faster process in recovering proceeds of crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also, more than 60% of the Compensation Awards to the claimants were paid by Government (these are awards before decentralisation- 2016). In addition 50 Police and Prisons Officers undertook a Diploma training in Human Rights on an annual basis at the Law Development Centre; in order to inculcate a culture of observance of human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police and Prisons have established human rights desks at their regional offices and as a result there improved observance of human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, 20 out of the targeted 11 MDAs have been trained on Human Rights Based Approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The UHRC has remained a coveted \u201cA\u201d status institution since it was first accredited in 2012 and has maintained the position of being the best human rights commission in Africa ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
