{"id":23595,"date":"2021-05-05T17:28:45","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T14:28:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=23595"},"modified":"2021-05-05T17:28:48","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T14:28:48","slug":"indian-covid19-variant-detected-in-kenya-as-tanzania-suspends-flights-from-asian-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/05\/indian-covid19-variant-detected-in-kenya-as-tanzania-suspends-flights-from-asian-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian COVID19 Variant Detected In Kenya As Tanzania Suspends Flights From Asian Country"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A variant of COVID-19 first diagnosed in India has been detected in Kenya, the health ministry said on Wednesday, days after the same variant was detected in neighbouring Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The health ministry last week said Kenya was suspending flights to and from India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanzania has also suspended flights to and from India amid the COVID-19 surge in the Southeast Asian nation, the country&#8217;s health ministry said, the latest sign of its increasingly active approach to tackling the pandemic under its new president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It joins a growing list of East African countries that have halted flights to and from India, including Uganda and Kenya.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suspension is effective immediately and will apply until further notice, the statement from the ministry&#8217;s permanent secretary Abel Makubi dated Tuesday said. Exceptions would be made for cargo planes and pre-approved flights on humanitarian, diplomatic, and medical missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are among the latest tough measures taken by the government to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus since President Samia Suluhu Hassan took office in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hassan\u2019s approach has differed markedly from her predecessor John Magufuli, who downplayed the severity of the virus and encouraged natural remedies to combat it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A variant of COVID-19 first diagnosed in India has been detected in Kenya, the health ministry said on Wednesday, days after the same variant was detected in neighbouring Uganda.
