{"id":22397,"date":"2021-03-16T10:33:26","date_gmt":"2021-03-16T07:33:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=22397"},"modified":"2021-03-16T10:33:28","modified_gmt":"2021-03-16T07:33:28","slug":"kenya-says-it-wont-handover-mombasa-port-to-china-over-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2021\/03\/16\/kenya-says-it-wont-handover-mombasa-port-to-china-over-debt\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya Says It Wont Handover Mombasa Port To China Over Debt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenya&#8217;s Finance Minister Ukur Yatani has denied reports that the country risks losing its main port to China should it fail to pay huge loans advanced for the construction of a new railway line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new 472km (293 mile) railway&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-40171095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost close to three times the international standard and four times the original estimate.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A local newspaper reported on Monday that Chinese lenders could take control of the port of Mombasa if Kenya defaults on the $3.2bn (\u00a32.3bn) loan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in a statement, the finance minister said &#8220;there is absolutely no risk of China or any other country taking over the port&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the loans for the railway cannot &#8220;be paid through any other fund or any other entity without the approval of parliament&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The government of Kenya cannot and has not pledged public assets as security for a debt because such an action&#8230; only violates provisions of its existing loans agreements,&#8221; Mr Yatani said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BBC<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kenya&#8217;s Finance Minister Ukur Yatani has denied reports that the country risks losing its main port to China should it fail to pay huge loans advanced for the construction of a new railway line.
