The Chairman of the General Court Martial Lt General Andrew Gutti has written to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General David Muhoozi over the pardon of ex-police chief General Kale Kayihura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the campaigns leading up to the January 14th Presidential elections, President Yoweri Museveni said he would consider a request by Kisoro District National Resiatnce (NRM) party leaders to pardon Kayihura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Museveni made the promise in Kisoro where Kayihura hails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his letter, Gutti says he has been approached by a group of youths from Kisoro who have been following up on the presidential promise, prompting him to seek clarity on the matter from the CDF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026 the youths approached me seeking progress on His Excellency\u2019s promise on Gen Kale Kayihura\u2019s case before the court while he was conducting his presidential campaign in Kisoro district.\u00a0This is forwarded for your guidance,\u201d Gen Gutti’s letter reads in part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gen Kayihura is accused of failing to protect war material by issuing arms to unauthorised persons including Boda Boda 2010 members led by convict Abdallah Kitatta between 2010 and 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is also accused of aiding and abetting the kidnapping, repatriating Rwandan exiles and refugees and Ugandan citizens to Rwanda between 2012 and 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before his sacking from police in April 2018, President Museveni had publicly bashed the institution for harboring what he termed as ‘kawukumi’ (weevils).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He would later be arrested on June 13, 2018 and held at Makindye Military Police Barracks for more than two months until he was charged on August 24, the same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
