I had a number of serious,\u00a0long-term\u00a0relationships\u00a0before I met my partner, but\u00a0they all ended because I couldn\u2019t imagine myself growing old with those people.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My friends and family thought I was too picky and that I should settle, but I wasn\u2019t interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not like I was buying a car\u00a0\u2014 I was looking to commit to a lifelong partnership with another human!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Makes a Girlfriend Marriage Material<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Luckily, these nine things about my partner confirmed that being with her is\u00a0the exact opposite of settling\u00a0\u2014 each one makes me\u00a0beyond\u00a0excited to spend forever with her.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. She\u2019s the best gift-giver.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This goes much deeper than the exchange of material things. She\u00a0nails my Christmas gifts every year\u00a0(although I keep telling her I don\u2019t need one)\u00a0because she\u2019s always listening for hints, even if I\u00a0don\u2019t know I\u2019m\u00a0dropping them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years ago she gave me an absolutely beautiful radio cabinet from 1954 with a built-in turntable. I\u2019d mentioned always wanting one a few times in passing without thinking much of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come December, we were\u00a0taking a mystery ride to Buffalo to pick it up!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. She has herself together.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Not only is she wicked smart, she\u2019s ambitious\u00a0and has a\u00a0trajectory for achieving her goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my mind, a life partner has to have more than a nebulous list of things they want to accomplish \u2014 they need the motivation to do so. Without that, you\u2019re not dating, you\u2019re babysitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. She\u2019s incredibly mature.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m six years older than my partner, but\u00a0she\u2019s the elder stateswoman\u00a0in our relationship. She\u2019s wise beyond her years, slow to anger, and she deals with things in a more even fashion than I do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A relationship between two reasonable people is, well, reasonable. That\u2019s a very good thing when it\u2019s supposed to last for the rest of your life. \u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. She\u2019s responsible. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

My partner is a practical person, probably because her parents are practical people. And with practicality,\u00a0responsibility often follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She does what she says she\u2019s going to do when she said she\u2019d do it, so I always know I can rely on her. She\u2019s the Will Smith to my Martin Lawrence. Yes, that was a Bad Boys<\/em> reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. She loves donuts.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I bought flowers for my partner once, and it\u2019s not that she didn\u2019t really like them, she just prefers donuts. Now, when I want to let her know I\u2019m thinking about her, that\u2019s what I surprise her with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love this about her because it\u2019s an effect of her not subscribing to traditional patterns of behavior just because she\u2019s \u201csupposed\u201d to be a certain way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She does what she wants and likes what she likes without making any apologies about it. In turn, that makes me feel comfortable enough to adopt that attitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. She prizes being open with each other.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a clich\u00e9 because it\u2019s true:\u00a0trust is the foundation of a healthy relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I trust\u00a0my partner\u00a0wholly\u00a0and, as far as I know, she feels the same.\u00a0That\u2019s probably a result of the fact that we\u00a0keep nothing from one another, good or bad. Even if it seems trivial, we share it. \u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. She\u2019s a beautiful human, period.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Not only does she have beautiful outsides, my partner has lovely insides, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s\u00a0a pleasant person to be around, a positive force in any room, and a plain old\u00a0good person. I never deny the fact that\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0flat-out a better human being\u00a0than I am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That doesn\u2019t just make life better for me, it makes life better for everyone around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. She\u2019s a crazy-good storyteller.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

My partner loves to talk, and she\u2019s full of stories. Her grandfather actually had to tell her to slow down and speak clearly when she was a kid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes I unfairly shut her down when she gets gabby at the wrong time, like when I\u2019m trying to sleep, but I can\u2019t imagine being without her storytelling. She\u2019s not just talking needlessly, she\u2019s talking because she\u2019s a thinker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest reasons I want to marry her is because we\u2019re in the middle of an interesting conversation that\u2019s going to take a lifetime to get through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. She\u2019s always by my side.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Like every couple, we have ups and downs, but the point is that we have them together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re constantly watching out for each other, and we make it a point to help each other out whenever possible. In essence, we go through life as a team.\u00a0She\u2019s my partner in crime and, otherwise, and I wouldn\u2019t have it any other way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
