When it comes to relationships, often\u00a0what we\u00a0think\u00a0we want\u00a0versus what we actually need are two different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re leading with superficial ideals such as\u00a0the perfect partner\u00a0should have model good looks, a six-figure+ income, and the right degree from the right school, topped off with six-pack abs, or a certain bra size, you\u2019re really ignoring the most imperative qualities that can actually make or break a relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact is, all those other \u201cqualities\u201d will not matter much long-term\u00a0if your partner doesn\u2019t have the following attributes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Good Husband Traits All Men Should Have<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you find a partner who embodies all these traits, you, my friend, have found a true keeper! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Integrity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A lie is a lie.\u00a0It doesn\u2019t matter if it\u2019s white, black or green. This includes lying by omission or withholding information, which is also profoundly dishonest. Someone who lies about anything no matter how insignificant\u00a0they\u00a0think it is, is not a trustworthy partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even\u00a0\u201cwhite\u201d lies can break trust\u00a0with your partner and can make them wonder what else you\u2019re hiding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True honesty and integrity are some of the hardest traits to come by these days and it\u2019s not a virtue you should overlook. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should be able to trust your partner to be honest with you about everything.\u00a0A transparent relationship is\u00a0a healthy relationship.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you find your partner is withholding information or skirting the truth, this is not a person you want to spend your life with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s better to be with someone who is\u00a0brutally honest\u00a0and is willing to ruffle a few feathers than someone who puts on the \u201cnice\u201d act and lies to save their hide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A straightforward person is the best kind of partner you can ever have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. A respectful, kind family<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Notice I said a \u201crespectful, kind\u201d family, not a \u201cperfect\u201d family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No family is perfect and they all have their quirks and minor annoyances, but if\u00a0your partner\u2019s family\u00a0is meddling, judgmental, jealous, or hypercritical, it is considered emotional abuse and if your partner won\u2019t or can\u2019t stand up to them it\u2019s likely to be a deal-breaker. This is not the kind of family you want to marry into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unless you want to spend your life\u00a0walking on eggshells\u00a0and feeling constantly judged and ridiculed, opt for a partner with an evolved, open-minded family that understands boundaries and respects your relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No matter how many good qualities you\u00a0think\u00a0he or she has, they\u2019re not really a \u201ccatch\u201d if they allow their family to be emotionally abusive toward you. Move on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are plenty of great people out there who know how to set boundaries and have loving and accepting families. Don\u2019t settle for less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Strength and independence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you want a loyal warrior by your side that you can trust with your life (and heart) no cowards need to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your partner lacks resolve,\u00a0independent thinking skills, and always needs approval from others, this is not a partner who will have your back in life. You are not dealing with a mature adult or someone who has the ability to be the kind of strong, capable partner you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life can be challenging and scary, and the only kind of partner that is going to hold up through the test of time is a strong, resilient partner who can be your rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your partner lacks the ability to handle adversity or stand up for themselves or you, it\u2019s time to cut the cord. It\u2019s hard to respect someone who doesn\u2019t demand respect for themselves or you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Kindness and empathy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kindness and empathy\u00a0are two words we hear a lot, but what do they actually mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a big difference between being run-of-the-mill \u201cnice\u201d and being \u201ckind.\u201d Anyone can be \u201cnice.\u201d Nice involves surface-level politeness that does not have to be genuine and it does not require empathy or integrity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They smile on cue, bring the right gifts, say all the right things, and hold the door open for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, you may find that \u201cnice\u201d people may be pleasant to your face, but then surprisingly nasty behind your back. You\u2019ll sometimes find that the people who thrive off being labeled \u201cnice\u201d may be overcompensating for something or have dark secrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be kind, you must be empathetic. Kindness and compassion cannot exist without empathy<\/a>. Kind people are genuine. They understand others on a whole different level and really feel for humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNice\u201d people say and do all the right things when everyone is watching. Kind people feel and follow through on all the right things when no one is watching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a big difference. It\u2019s better to have an empathetic partner who gives $20 to a homeless person than a \u201cnice\u201d partner who gives you a $5k Chanel bag, then lies to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Decent people as friends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is always such a touchy subject and for good reason. You\u2019re probably going to spend a lot of time with these people and if\u00a0they\u2019re immature and disrespectful, suffice it to say you\u2019re going to have a hard time reconciling wanting to be with your partner and\u00a0not\u00a0wanting to be around people that think making fun of disabled people or cracking homophobic\/sexist jokes is so\u00a0hilarious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a big difference between being a humor-less killjoy versus not going along with things that go against your values and violate basic human decency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re all supposed to be adults here and we\u2019re supposed to know that just because a group is doing or saying something doesn\u2019t make it right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You know that old adage about following people off a bridge? Yeah, don\u2019t do that. If your partner\u2019s friends are disrespectful, this is a red flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality is that personalities can conflict. We\u2019re not all going to get along with everyone in the world, but it\u2019s important to do your best to get along with your partner’s friends and respect their friendships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn\u2019t mean you have to like their friends as much as they do, but understand they have a place in your partner\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if you find your partner\u2019s friends to be perpetually intolerable and disrespectful toward you and others, and your partner refuses to hold them accountable, it\u2019s a wise idea to move on. You don\u2019t want to deal with that for the rest of your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also worth mentioning that questionable friends can reveal that your partner may be hiding\u00a0undesirable traits\u00a0and may not be as good as he\/she is portraying themselves to be. As the saying goes: \u201cBirds of a feather flock together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. A healthy lifestyle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Choosing a partner who leads\u00a0a healthy lifestyle\u00a0is vital to your long-term health as well. Our partners can be significantly influential on us and if you have a partner whose idea of a good time is\u00a0getting sloshed in bars, there are two likely outcomes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

a) You\u2019re going to go along with it and live a less healthy lifestyle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

b) You\u2019re going to refuse to do it and probably end up in arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Either way, if you want a healthy life, choose a partner who also leads\u00a0a healthy life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A friend of mine who is a successful entrepreneur and\u00a0was\u00a0an infamous \u201cparty boy\u201d recently wrote a beautiful tribute to his fianc\u00e9 (who is a wellness coach) where he praised her for turning his life around and helping him lead a happier, less-stressed, healthier lifestyle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He relayed that before meeting her, he had all the things he was \u201csupposed\u201d to have, but that his life was the same repetitive party and lacked meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went on to say that he is now the happiest he\u2019s ever been and that the absolute best decision of his life has not been his business, education, travels, or parties, but his choice of choosing a healthy partner who helped bring meaning and depth to his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A truly great partner\u00a0is one who helps us be the best, healthiest version of ourselves \u2014\u00a0not perpetuates our vices and indulges in our unhealthy choices. If your partner does not inspire you to be a better person, it may be time to move on and find someone who does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
