{"id":18305,"date":"2020-09-11T10:55:41","date_gmt":"2020-09-11T07:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=18305"},"modified":"2020-09-11T10:55:48","modified_gmt":"2020-09-11T07:55:48","slug":"belgian-court-says-lumumbas-tooth-should-be-returned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2020\/09\/11\/belgian-court-says-lumumbas-tooth-should-be-returned\/","title":{"rendered":"Belgian Court Says Lumumba&#8217;s Tooth Should Be Returned"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A court in Belgium has ruled that a tooth taken from the corpse of Congolese independence hero Patrice Lumumba should be returned to his family, Belgian media are reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lumumba, who became Congo&#8217;s first prime minister after it gained independence from Belgium in 1960, was murdered in 1961 after he was abducted by separatist fighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Belgian government had a role in his death and in 2002 issued a formal apology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The British and American spy agencies are also believed to have been involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lumumba&#8217;s tooth is thought to have been taken by a Belgian policeman who was helping to dispose of the body, AFP news agency reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was later seized by the Belgian authorities, AFP adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court in Belgium said that the tooth should be given to Lumumba&#8217;s daughter, Juliana Lumumba, who had written a letter to the Belgian king asking for its return, the Brussels Times website reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>BBC Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A court in Belgium has ruled that a tooth taken from the corpse of Congolese independence hero Patrice Lumumba should be returned to his family, Belgian media are reporting.
