{"id":17697,"date":"2020-08-26T10:52:14","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T07:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=17697"},"modified":"2020-08-26T10:52:20","modified_gmt":"2020-08-26T07:52:20","slug":"nema-denies-selling-off-bugoma-forest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2020\/08\/26\/nema-denies-selling-off-bugoma-forest\/","title":{"rendered":"NEMA Denies Selling Off Bugoma Forest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>National Environment Management Authority has denied the allegations being made that Bugoma forest had been sold off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since June, 2020, there have been allegations that NEMA sold Bugoma Central Forest Reserve to Hoima Sugar limited for them to grow sugarcane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hoima Sugar Limited was apparently going to take over 5,000 hectares of the forest to plant sugarcane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However since this information got to the public, people have not been pleased and they have started #SaveBugomaForest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hashtag started trending as different Ugandans expressed their disappointed in NEMA for selling off the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of them say that at the rate at which Uganda&#8217;s forest cover is being destroyed, Uganda&#8217;s climate will soon turn into a semi-desert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NEMA released a statement saying that the land was not sold off but rather with the guidance the Environment law of 1995, NEMA only over saw land allocation as determined by court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sugarcane plantation is on an area that was formerly grassland and not forested as many people believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NEMA also insists that all the ecosystems in the area including the river, streams, wetlands will continue to protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National Environment Management Authority has denied the allegations being made that Bugoma forest had been sold off.
