Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno has been named a Field Marshal by parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The honour was given to him during Tuesday’s celebration of the country’s 60th anniversary of independence from France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the highest military rank in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parliamentary speaker explained it was a recognition after he led an offensive against jihadists in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country has been facing attacks from Islamist militants like other neighbours across the Sahel region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou are an icon and a symbol for Chad,\u201d the speaker of the assembly, Haroun Kabadi, was quoted as saying during the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president dedicated the honour \u201cto all my brothers in arms\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe threat of terrorism is still there, and it is ruthless … The fight against terrorism is a vital imperative and will remain at the core of our concerns,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
