{"id":16034,"date":"2020-07-08T08:34:08","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T05:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=16034"},"modified":"2020-07-08T08:34:10","modified_gmt":"2020-07-08T05:34:10","slug":"court-stops-the-eviction-of-304-residents-of-makindye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2020\/07\/08\/court-stops-the-eviction-of-304-residents-of-makindye\/","title":{"rendered":"Court Stops the Eviction of 304 Residents of Makindye"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The High Court Land Division has extended its order restraining National Environmental Management Authority-NEMA from evicting 304 people from Kansanga Kiwafu B and Heritage Zones in Makindye Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Justice Yasin Nyanzi extended the order pending the hearing of an application by the affected residents challenging their eviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The judgement comes after the&nbsp; residents complained that they would suffer irreparable damage unless NEMA is blocked from evicting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The order was scheduled to expire on 6th July 2020 since the matter had been fixed for hearing before Justice Nyanzi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the main case couldn\u2019t be heard as scheduled because the judge had advised the applicants to amend their suit and reduce the number of complainants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The applicants are challenging NEMA&#8217;s Environmental restoration order of June 8, 2020, which gave them 21 days to demolish their houses and vacate the suit land or else face forceful eviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The applicants contend that they have been living on the contested land for over thirty years even before the NEMA Act was enacted in 1998.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The High Court Land Division has extended its order restraining National Environmental Management Authority-NEMA from evicting 304 people from Kansanga Kiwafu B and Heritage Zones in Makindye Division.
