{"id":15758,"date":"2020-06-19T10:16:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-19T07:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=15758"},"modified":"2020-06-19T10:16:03","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T07:16:03","slug":"burundis-new-president-vows-to-crash-opposition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2020\/06\/19\/burundis-new-president-vows-to-crash-opposition\/","title":{"rendered":"Burundi&#8217;s New President Vows To Crash Opposition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new president of Burundi has warned opposition parties that they &#8220;would no longer get space&#8221; in the country, questioning &#8220;why should one oppose the government&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evariste Ndayishimiye made the statement at his lengthy inauguration speech on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also asked media and human rights activists to partner with the government to tackle national issues, otherwise \u201cthey will be working for others, not Burundians\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However he also promised freedom of expression and protection of human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEveryone should be free to express ideas and challenges to the government. No-one should believe only politicians are able to,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Ndaysihimiye added that Burundi wanted good neighbours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the last five years, his predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza had fallen out with the northern neighbour, Paul Kagame of Rwanda &#8211; relations that negatively affected citizens of both nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDifferences between countries should not be solved by the size of power but with mutual respect discussions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thousands attended Mr Ndayishimiye&#8217;s inauguration at the stadium in the capital Gitenga, which also included prayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fast-tracked ceremony comes after his predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza died suddenly last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Nkurunziza died aged 55 on 8 June after suffering a cardiac arrest, the government said. There are unconfirmed reports that he was suffering from Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After 15 years in power, Mr Nkurunziza was due to step down in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Ndayishimiye is a former rebel leader, like Mr Nkurunziza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was backed by his predecessor and was declared the winner of May&#8217;s presidential election, which the opposition said was rigged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>BBC Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new president of Burundi has warned opposition parties that they &#8220;would no longer get space&#8221; in the country, questioning &#8220;why should one oppose the government&#8221;.
