Rwanda’s national carrier, Rwandair, has announced it will cut the net salaries of its employees by between 8% to 65% as it seeks to deal with the effects of coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a memo to its staff, Rwandair said the decision was made to \u201cavoid laying-off staff\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It has also extended the suspension of contracts for pilots and non-essential staff until further notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis was an extremely tough decision, however, the choice we made is the best option at this time,\u201d the memo stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An air hostess, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the BBC Great Lakes that the pay cuts was not a surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is very sad, we are always expecting the worst this time around. This is the hardest time I am going through in my four years with Rwandair,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The carrier that flies to 26 international destinations in Africa, Asia and Europe stopped flights on 19 March after Rwanda announced restrictive measures to halt the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The country reported eight new cases of coronavirus on Sunday taking the total tally to 191 with 92 recoveries and no fatalities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
