The\nhead teacher of Kabojja Junior School Mr. Richard Okiror has refuted all the\nallegations labelled against the institution of disobeying the directives that\nwere issued by President Museveni on the containment and prevention of\nCOVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The\ntruth is we closed the school on Thursday 19th earlier than the day the\npresident had directed because we wanted our teachers also to go and pick their\nchildren with a settled mind in the boarding schools where they are studying\nfrom. We didn’t disobey the president,” said Okiror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His\ncomments came days after police at Kiira Road station stormed the school and\napprehended 21 teachers from the institution and 53 teachers of Daffodils\nprimary school accusing them of disobeying Presidential directives to close all\nschools, in the wake of a Coronavirus outbreak in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\na phone interview with, The Ug Mirror, Okiror said; “I told my teachers\nthat since we have got an abrupt closure of the \nschool, I asked them to come\nback and organise their property, classes and lock up the rooms on\nMonday 23rd<\/sup> because I didn’t want to see a disorganised school.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Okiror\nsaid he further instructed some other non-teaching staff to also come and clean\nup the institution in order to leave the place tidy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I\nwas surprised to see the DPC Kira storming the school with his men. I tried to\nexplain to him, little did I know that he had already instructed his men to\nclose our gate and he refused to listen to me,” he narrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Okiror\nadmitted that indeed children were found\nat school but these pupils were for his\nstaff and there was nothing like studies ongoing at the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Its\ntrue children were at school but they were for our staff and they were not many\nbecause they were only five children. Honestly, I don’t know why teachers came\nwith them at school,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He\nalso noted that following the school culture, he instructed some of his\nteachers to come to school and prepare some holiday work for the children to\nkeep them busy during this period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “Some\nteachers came to prepare holiday work for our children who are at home\nredundant and I had communicated to the parents to come and pick that work on\n27th Friday March. We also wanted mid-term results to be posted to the parents\nusing their email address,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mr.\nKambale Abdallah, a teacher at the same school said; \u201cIn fact we were not\nteaching. We broke off on Thursday so we came back because our children had\ndone mid-term exams, we were also preparing some work so that we send them\ntogether with mid-term results to the parents online.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n He\nreiterated that the main purpose of appearing at the institution despite the\npresident directives was to organise some holiday work for their pupils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “That’s\nwhat we were doing there, all the teachers who were found at school, they were\nnot teaching, they had come purposely to prepare some work for these kids who\nare at home,” he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The\npresident last week ordered all schools to close whereas any political, social,\ncultural or any other form of gatherings were also banned for a period of 32\ndays to avoid the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Currently,\nUganda has 18 positive cases of the virus that wants to wipe humanity from the\nface of mother earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The deputy spokesperson Kampala metropolitan\npolice, Luke Owoyesigyire said five children were recovered at Kabojja Junior,\nand that preliminary reports indicate that they had come for interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe\nfound 53 teachers gathered At Daffodil whereas at Kabojja Junior School, there\nwere 21 teachers and five pupils,” Owoyesigyire said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He\nfurther warned all school owners to close the premises and not to allow any\nparents, teachers or students including those looking to fetch homework from\nteachers should not be allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLet\nus all remain vigilant as police operations continue. We as police do not go\nlooking for news, but concerned citizens call us. Wherever we are called, we\nshall come and arrest the school heads and teachers so they can face the wrath\nof the law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He\nexplained that it is in the interest of the citizens\u2019 health that they avoid\ngatherings which would be a fertile ground for the coronavirus to spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Consequently,\nthe Inspector General of Police, John Martins Okoth Ochola ordered all police\ncommanders and units to ensure they enforce Museveni\u2019s order with immediate\neffect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe\nguidelines must be enforced with immediate effect. All units must ensure\ncompliance.
