Members\nof Parliament have raised concerns over the increasing number of single\nmothers, who they said have been left to shoulder the child care burden single headedly.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Legislators\nobserved that government programmes on women empowerment have largely focused\non addressing gender based violence and to some extent personal incomes, but\nthat the growing community of single mothers has hardly been explored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere\nis a growing number of single parents world-wide and some countries have adopted\na policy of either compelling men to do cost sharing. They attach part of one\u2019s\nsalary or wages to ensure child support,\u201d said Hon Muhammad Nsereko <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nsereko\nwas making a contribution during debate on the Statement on the reporting\nobligations on the status of women in regard to the 64th Session of CSW and\nimplementation of UNSC Resolution 1325 on Tuesday 10 March 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Presenting\nthe statement, the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Hon.\nPeace Mutuuzo, said that Uganda has performed well in enactment of laws and\nformulation of policies on ending gender based violence, enhancing capacity of\nduty bearers and improving access to health services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nalso remarked that notable progress has been made in increasing women\nrepresentation and participation in political leadership and decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nFort Portal Municipality MP, Alex Ruhunda, said he was worried that the\nmajority of single mothers have been abandoned by men to carry the burden of\nchildcare because of low incomes and unemployment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cResearch\nshows that we have a big number of single mothers than ever before and because\nmen are either poor of unemployed, many have neglected children to women,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hon.\nAbdulatif Sebaggala said that mothers in his constituency are the bread winners\ndespite their meagre income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\nhave so many women in Kampala manning their homes with capital ranging between\nShs50,000 – 100,000. How much more would women do if government opens up\ninterest free loans to these mothers?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hon\nAnn Adeke Ebaju was concerned that single motherhood is worsened by un equal\ndistribution of property and ownership. She called on government to fight for\nwomen who she said have been rendered beggars in their own families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\nis because of our culture that women have been left out of property ownership\nand distribution. This should be taken as violation of their economic rights,\u201d\nAdeke said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
