Speaker\nhas instructed the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development to ensure\nthat the domestic violence shelters located around the country are reactivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kadaga\nsaid that much as the Minister of Gender boasted about the availability of\nactive domestic violence shelters supported by the government around the\ncountry, many of them had been shut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cI tried to contact the Chief Administrative\nOfficer (CAO) of Kamuli over the issue and I was told that it was not active;\ncan the government look into this?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domestic\nviolence shelters are intended \u201cto provide temporary refuge and basic\nnecessities for women victims of domestic violence; and psychological\ncounselling and emergency medical care to the women victims of domestic\nviolence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially,\nthere were not more than 15 such shelters in Uganda. Ten are run by an NGO\ncalled Action Aid in Amuru, Gulu, Lira, Nebbi, Katakwi, Kween, Kumi, Pallisa,\nMubende and Kampala; four were run by MIFUMI in Tororo, Moroto, Mbarara, and\nMasaka; and one by Uganda Women\u2019s Network (UWONET) in Kamuli.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
