On Sunday, Uganda joined the rest of the World to Celebrate the International Women\u2019s Day. Hinged on the theme \u201cCelebrating 25 Years of the 1995 Constitution: Milestones on promoting Gender Equality and Women\u2019s Empowerment in Uganda.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thee function took place at Maluku Administration grounds in Mbale District attracted a huge crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The national theme for\u00a0 the celebration was selected in recognition of the important role women play in society and to celebrate the liberties and opportunities the Uganda government and the 1995 Uganda Constitution gave to women and the girl child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Yoweri Museveni who was the Chief Guest at the function\u00a0 said women empowerment can best be achieved through economic Independence and that his government has put in place several initiatives to empower women economically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that the Ugandan government has already made many strides in women emanicipation such as the 1.5 points added to girls joining University, equal opportunities that has mostly been embraced by the Armed Forces where any fit person joins regardless of gender and raising the number of women in parliament among others.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Museveni condemned\u00a0 gender violence and advised the public to report such cases to both the police and through the political leadership\u00a0 structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Frank Tumwebaze, the Minister of Gender and Social Development reiterated that Uganda had taken steps in improving women\u2019s wellbeing through\u00a0 programmes like wealth creation, youth fund and ICT among others.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the International Womens Day serves to remind the World of the call to action for Women empowerment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Rose Malango, the UN Resident Coordinator said that Women and girls who are empowered are integral in the household and the community and hence contribute to sustainable development of the country.
