Recently\nBunyoro Kingdom petitioned the National Curriculum Development Centre over\nomission of its history in the revised lower secondary curriculum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\npetition was as a result of consultations in which the cultural institution\nestablished that \u201cour history was not featuring in the topic under state\nformations where Bunyoro was previously one of the case studies alongside Buganda,\nAnkole and Acholi”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This\nnew school curriculum began with senior one students who reported to school on\nFebruary 17, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\nis aimed at creating a balance between theoretical and practical subjects\nundertaken by secondary school students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A\nnumber of subjects have been merged while others have been done away with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According\nto Education Minister Janet Museveni, among others, the new curriculum promotes\neffective learning and acquisition of skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nsaid the curriculum further reduces subject and content overload and addresses\nthe social and economic needs of the country by meeting the educational needs\nof the learners aspiring for higher academic learning as well as those that\nwish to transit to the labour market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\ngovernment through the National Curriculum Development Centre is set to handle\nBunyoro\u2019s concerns pertaining the revised lower secondary curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nKingdom noted in the petition that Bunyoro’s treasured social events such as\ncoronation anniversary celebrations (Empango) and Empaako naming ceremony,\nwhich was inscribed by UNESCO as an intangible heritage that required\nprotection, were not included in the new curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bunyoro\nKingdom Spokesperson Francis Mugerwa said government had responded to their\npetition and promised to address the Kingdom\u2019s concerns regarding the revised\ncurriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe\nPrime Minister has received feedback from the Director of the National Curriculum\nDevelopment Centre Ms Grace K Baguma,\u201d he said <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nalso added the MS Baguma said that they proposed the topic of Bunyoro Kitara\nKingdom to be learnt through the discovery method where learners would carry\nout research on the topic with the teacher’s guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nfurther said Ms Baguma had explained that kingdoms with a lot of literature\nsuch as the Wanga Kingdom of Kenya and Bunyoro were left out for students to\nresearch and discover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nnoted that Ms Baguma further informed the kingdom that following their concern about\nthe syllabus, content will be adjusted in the reprint to include the history of\nBunyoro Kitara Kingdom on the list of other societies in East Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nKingdom appreciated the National Curriculum Development Centre for the response\nand pledged continued engagement \u201cto ensure that our concerns are positively\naddressed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nnew curriculum includes new subjects such Chinese language, Music Dance and\nDrama to become Performing Arts, while Fine Art has been redesigned to include\nelements of design to become Art and Design.
