A\ndelegation from the UN Women Country office in Kampala has today paid a\ncourtesy call to the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Hon.\nFrank K. Tumwebaze during which they discussed issues pertaining to the fight\nagainst Gender Based Violence (GBV) and the need to strengthen reporting on\nsocial development interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nUN Women team, including respective programme officers, was led by the Country\nRepresentative, Dr. Maxime Houinato while the Minister was flanked by the\nacting Permanent Secretary, Mr Ebitu James, the Commissioner Gender and Women\nAffairs, Ms Angela Nakafeero and her assistant Ms Margaret Kyomukama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nMinister called for renewed energy to fight GBV in society noting that the vice\nis prevalent although cases largely go unreported for various reasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGBV\nis real due to push factors like alcohol abuse and unfaithfulness among\npartners which has been escalated by technology adoption\u201d The Minister said,\nadding that there is need to strengthen law enforcement and mind-set change\namong the populace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nalso called for a review of how job opportunities can be quantified with\ninvestments in the social development sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBudgets\nmust create jobs. Every public investment project should be subjected to a tool\nto establish what jobs are being created,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr.\nMaxime commended Minister Frank K. Tumwebaze for his vision saying it was forward-looking\nand with potential to cause impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nrevealed that half of UN Women’s intervention in Uganda is in the area of\nfighting GBV and violence against women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\ndecried the high cost implications of GBV and warned that it denies the\ncommunities much-needed development projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUganda\nis incurring over Shs 77 billion in cost or opportunity costs in managing\nviolence against women. This is a huge cost which could go into various\ndevelopment projects,\u201d Dr. Maxime noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nalso emphasized the need to tackle GBV through a behavioural change approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On\nthe investment in social development interventions, Dr. Maxime decried the low\nvalue accorded to it and urged for increased lobbying to change the status quo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\nwant people to be used to investing in the sector without thinking that it\u2019s\ntoo much for Gender.\u201d He noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nMinister and the UN Women team agreed to have a follow up meeting where partnership\nin the areas discussed would be concretized. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
