{"id":13344,"date":"2020-01-20T10:22:41","date_gmt":"2020-01-20T07:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=13344"},"modified":"2020-01-20T10:22:43","modified_gmt":"2020-01-20T07:22:43","slug":"south-africas-world-champion-boxer-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2020\/01\/20\/south-africas-world-champion-boxer-dies\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s world champion boxer dies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first black South African to win a world boxing title has died at the age of 67.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter Mathebula made history in 1980 when he beat fellow flyweight Tae-Shik Kim of South Korea at the World Boxing Association title fight in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His fearsome skill inside the ring earned him the nickname &#8220;Terror&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mathebula had been &#8220;in and out of hospital before deteriorating&#8221;,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n09SlrvJB7I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his sister Dianah Tlhale told SABC<\/a>. He died at Leratong Hospital on Saturday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a child growing in South Africa&#8217;s North West province, Mathebula initially wanted to become a professional footballer, but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesouthafrican.com\/sport\/history-making-boxing-legend-peter-mathebula-passes-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it is said that he began boxing at the age of nine instead, before having his first amateur fight aged 19<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once he turned professional his main rival was Joe Ngidi,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesouthafrican.com\/sport\/history-making-boxing-legend-peter-mathebula-passes-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The South African news site reports<\/a>. Ngidi won the national flyweight title in 1975, which became Mathebula&#8217;s first major title when he triumphed over Ngidi the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His world title victory in 1980 was undoubtedly the proudest moment of his career, earning him fans across South Africa at the height of apartheid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It had only been three years since segregation rules banning white and black boxers from competing against one another were lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sowetanlive.co.za\/sport\/2012-06-14-legends-corner-when-peter-terror-mathebula-ruled-the-ring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;I thought I was dreaming,&#8221; he told the Sowetan newspaper years after his win<\/a>. &#8220;I nearly collapsed with joy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vjECabR13Ks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grainy video footage captures the last moments of the fight<\/a>&nbsp;and Mathebula&#8217;s elation as he is announced the winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He retired from boxing three years later aged 31, and went on to coach aspiring boxers close to where he grew up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The legend has gone\u201a long live the legend\u201a&#8221; Boxing South Africa head Tsholofelo Lejaka told local media on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Not only was Bra Terror a trailblazer\u201a but he was the gentleman of the sport through and through.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first black South African to win a world boxing title has died at the age of 67.
