President Museveni has said that the just concluded commemorative trek across the Luweero triangle has helped him get a first hand assessment of how the NRM structures are working at the grassroots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing journalists at Birembo in Kakumiro district, Museveni said the disconnect between the NRM members of parliament and voters can be addressed through scheduling\u00a0regular interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the trek was one of the ways\u00a0 to reconnect with young generation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“You young people look at the history of the one who were before you who had a deep understand of what African needs but also had the discipline to struggle,” he said.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Museveni said he has also been able to identify gaps within the NRM system which can be\u00a0 addressed by the members of parliament through holding regular consultations with the electorates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“When I move around, I am able to check on our system how it is working or not working and also getting in touch\u00a0 with some of the old cadres,” Museveni said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the issue of dishing out money in envelopes especially to the elderly, Museveni said the cash donations were meant to those who don’t benefit from government programmes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Those people, you saw I was giving some little support are mainly 70 years and above, they are no longer able to participate in those programmes,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said those elders were definitely part of those who were either supporting or actively involved in all their activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“So when I see them, it is not correct to just bypass them and go knowing that I will not come back for a long time,” he said.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
