Abdu\nKatuntu, Member of Parliament for Bugweri county, has revealed that he will not\ncontest for a parliamentary seat again in 2021 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nForum for Democratic Change (FDC) leaning legislator will have served for 21\nyears in 2021 since he was elected in 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nmade the remarks while appearing on NBS Television\u2019s Morning Breeze, Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Katuntu\nsaid that he is very proud for serving his people for all those years and it is\ntime to move on and focus on other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\nam not offering myself as a candidate for the elections as a Member of\nParliament for Bugweri county. I promised my people and the whole country.\nAfter 20 years, I think it is time to move on,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nhowever expressed his concerns about the 2021 elections, noting that they are\nlikely to be vulnerable to violence if the security continues to act as if\nthey\u2019re partisan and bent to the side of the incumbent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe\n2021 general election is going to be more competitive and vulnerable to\nviolence. My issue is the intervention of security because sometimes they\nbecome partisan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Katuntu,\nborn 12 March 1965, is a Ugandan politician, currently serving as the Member of\nParliament for Bugweri County, Bugweri District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nis a member of Forum for Democratic Change party and serves as Shadow Attorney\nGeneral in the Parliament of Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nwas first elected in 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Katuntu\nis a practising lawyer, having received an LLB from Makerere University and a\nDIP, LP (LDC) from the Law Development Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nis a former member of the Pan-African Parliament from Uganda and the Rapporteur\nof the Committee on Justice and Human Rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nnarrowly lost his parliamentary seat in the 2006 Ugandan general election to\nKirunda Kivejinja but successfully challenged the result, citing widespread\nmalpractices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\ncourt found that \u201cduring the campaign period and on polling day, there was\nwide-spread intimidation, and torture in Bugweri Constituency\u201d, biasing the\nresult in favour of Kivejinja. Katuntu won the resulting by-election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
