For\ndevelopment to happen across the world, there must be fair global trade,\nPresident Museveni has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nPresident made the case for global prosperity yesterday (Monday) as he\naddressed the 9th Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States Summit in\nNairobi, Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\ntwo-day summit at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, attended by\nseveral heads of state from the 79-member state group, is running under the\ntheme, “A Transformed ACP: Committed to Multilateralism”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing\nthe audience, President Museveni said, “The challenge in the globe in last\n300 years has been unbalanced development. Since the Industrial Revolution in\nEurope, we have had development in some corners of the globe and underdevelopment\nin others.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whereas\nthe discrepancy was being sorted with some third world countries like India\ngetting out of poverty, the President noted, it was important that the push\nencompassed all countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The\nexpectation is that the whole world should get out of under-development and we\nwork for global prosperity. It should be prosperity for all of us instead of\nhaving a small number of people who are prosperous and the majority who are in\nunderdevelopment,” said the President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\ntold the attentive audience that one of the tools to ensure this prosperity\nhappens is to enforce fair trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“When\nwe trade together, we stimulate growth in our respective countries. However in\norder to trade, we must have the basics. We must resolve the issues of\ninfrastructure, cost of production, cost of money and the human resource,”\nhe added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nchallenge for organisations like the ACP, the President observed, was to\ntherefore create enablers of trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Citing\nUganda’s case, the President said the country has a lot of potential, given\nthat just 32 percent of its population was in the money economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“They\nhave not maximised their potential and I know this is the case with most\nAfrican countries,” he said. “We are therefore working to better this\nthrough commercial agriculture, building industries, supporting the services\nsector and tapping into ICT opportunities.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President\nMuseveni said once this was done, production would be massive, noting that\nUganda was already experiencing over-supply of maize, milk, sugarcane and bananas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The\ninternal market market is not enough, even the East African Market is not\nenough. Therefore, it is imperative that we about talk global trade. The ACP is\nright by emphasising multilateralism. It will cause prosperity in whole\nworld,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A\nCASE FOR LINKAGE<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Commenting\nabout the subjects of the summit’s discussion; governance, social-economic\ntransformation and climate change; the President said they should be discussed\nas a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“These\ntopics are linked because if you don’t encourage social-economic transformation\nof society, you cannot sustainably deal with issues of governance,” guided\nthe President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On\nclimate change, the President observed that Uganda had recently suffered the\nwrath of the weather, with landslides and floods killing several people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
”\nThis is partly because people go to wetlands for land for agriculture. Why\ndon’t they go to industries? It is because they are not enough industries for\nthem. That’s the linkage,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some\naspects of climate change, he said, are due to greed, especially in the North,\nwhere people are using bad methods of production and producing a lot of carbon\ndioxide but some of the problems are due to acute need for land for\nagriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
WE’RE\nONE<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President\nMuseveni also discouraged the idea that Africa should be separated from the\nCaribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I\ndon’t know where that idea came from. I don’t think it’s a good one. Why do we\nseperate ourselves from the African diaspora? The Caribbean, the US, Brazil\nthese are part of the African Diaspora,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier\nin the day, President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya was appointed chair of the ACP\nGroup for a three-year tenure while Ambassador Georges Chikoti of Angola\nbecomes the new secretary general.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
