Uganda\nPolice has joined hands with other partners to intensify the fight against\nGender Based Violence (GBV) in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nDirector Research, Planning and Development, AIGP Edward Ochom has urged the\ncommunity and partners to join hands and respond to the cry of women and girls\nin respective communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His\nremarks stem from the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, an\nInternational Campaign which takes place every year commencing from 25th\nNovember, the international day for the elimination of violence against Women\nto 10th December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\nwas initiated by activists at the first Women\u2019s Global Leadership Institute in\n1991 and it is commemorated and coordinated each year by the Centre for Women\u2019s\nGlobal Leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This\ntime, a caravan has been put in place to traverse the country and help during\nthe 12 days activism in sensitization of the masses in the fight against gender-based\nviolence<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the force\u2019s commitment is as per the\nconstitutional mandate, cooperation with civilian agencies in protecting life\nand property of all citizens in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nforce joins the global community in\nmaking a statement on behalf of women and girls suffering from gender based violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further explained that; \u201cAccording to the\ncrime report 2018 presented in May 2019, it showed a decrease in the volume of\ncrimes by 5.25 per cent and on the other hand an increase in sexual related\ncrimes with 17,521 as compared to 16,862 indicating 659 increase.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that violence is experienced by both\nwomen and men in Uganda and stands at 51 per cent which is far above the\nAfrican average of about 37.7 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ochom\nrevealed that, Police has set up structures such as Sexual Gender Based\nViolence desk, Child and Family Protection Unit, Women Affairs and Community\nLiaison Offices to respond to the cry of battered women and girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nSwedish Ambassador to Uganda, Per Lindgarde, said; \u201cHuman rights and access to\njustice for women and girls is core of Sweden\u2019s intervention in Uganda and\nworking with Uganda Police is of great important when it comes to increased\naccess to justice for women and girls and women\u2019s economic empowerment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nsaid Sweden pledges continued support to the justice sector in terms of\ncapacity building of formal justice actors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nnoted that it will focus on the entire justice chain from entry to exit in\nterms of investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating GBV cases in a gender\nresponsive, victim-centred and trauma-informed matter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
