President\nMuseveni has directed those seeking to encroach on wetlands and forest reserves\nto vacate as soon as possible before they are forcefully evicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Museveni\nmade the remarks in Yandwe village, Luwero District while commissioning SR Afro\nChicks and Breeders Limited, a poultry farm belonging to Indian investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His\ncomments came after the village chairperson appealed to him to intervene in a\nland dispute between locals and National forest Authority noting that about 726\npeople were forced off their land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\npresident said Lumansi wetland is being degraded by the locals which is a great\neffect on the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Museveni\nsaid: \u201cI have seen people encroaching on Lumansi to grow yams and their\npotatoes; that is a big mistake, they should get out of that wetland. No one\nshould claim and no one can deceive me that they were there before because I\nknow those wetlands no one was there before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\ndirected Luwero Resident District Commissioner and Chief Administrative Officer\nto ensure that encroachers vacate wetlands and forest reserves with immediate\neffect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Museveni\nalso threatened to fire district leaders if they fail to carry out his directive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If\nI come and find people still in the wetlands, I will fire those district\nleaders including RDC and CAO,\u201d he said <\/p>\n\n\n\n
President\nMuseveni applauded Indians for investing in Uganda castigating former president\nIddi Amin for expelling Asians in 1972. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pheobe\nNamulindwa, Luwero RDC said many people living in wetlands should be educated\nthe dangers of destroying wetlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“They\ndon\u2019t know that what they are doing affects \nthe environment in one way or the other so as the RDC, security committee\nand the technical team, we have embarked\non the mass sensitisation so that they know and we also guide them on what can\nbe done in the wetlands,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SR\nAfro Chicks and Breeders Limited is a 102-hectare poultry farm which has been\noperating in Luwero since 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
