At\nleast 24 people were killed, including some on the ground, when a small plane\ncrashed into a densely populated neighborhood in the city of Goma in the\neastern Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday, a local lawmaker and a\nrescue worker said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\naircraft, which was operated by local company Busy Bee, crashed shortly after\ntake-off en route to the city of Beni, about 250 km to the north, North Kivu\nGovernor Carly Nzanzu Kasivita’s office said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\ncompany said the 19-seater Dornier 228-200 had 16 passengers and two crew\nmembers on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There\nwas no word yet on what might have caused the accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jean\nPaul Lumbulumbu, the vice president of North Kivu’s parliament, said 24 bodies\nhad been recovered from the rubble, including those of several people hit by\nfalling debris. A rescue worker, who asked not to be named, said 26 bodies had\nbeen recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At\nthe crash site in Goma’s Mapendo neighborhood, residents threw water from\nbuckets and cooking pots onto the smoldering wreckage. The rear section of the\nplane rested sideways, propped up by a wall, videos posted on social media\nshowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A\nReuters witness at the scene said two people \u2014 one who was on board the plane\nand a child in a building hit by the wreckage \u2014 were rescued before the plane\nexploded into flames after crashing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police\narrested one man for stealing cash from the rubble and fired warning shots to\ndisperse people who had started looting, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Air\naccidents are relatively frequent in the DR Congo because of lax safety\nstandards and poor maintenance. All Congolese commercial carriers, including\nBusy Bee, are banned from operating in the European Union (EU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A\ncargo plane departing from the same airport and carrying staff members of\nPresident Felix Tshisekedi crashed an hour after take-off last month, killing\nall eight people on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
