<\/figure>\n\n\n\nHe\ncalled upon the government to put more emphasis on the training of police and\nordinary people on how to handle accident victims especially during the time of\ntransportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe\nreport that we have indicates that only 7 people reach the hospital not only\nbecause of the accidents but because of the way they are transported to the\nhospital,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nasifah\nKasule from the World Health Organization said: \u201cWe don\u2019t have strong response\nunit, even in the hospital they are not well equipped to handle victims when\nthey are there but what kills them most is unsafe transport.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nnoted that even traffic police don\u2019t not have police response unit department\nwhich is a big gap in the transport sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Norman\nMusinga, the Police Traffic Commander Kampala metropolitan confirmed the report\nnoting that the force lacks necessary equipment to support accident victims and\nthis has also put the lives of their own officers at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSometimes\nwe are forced to improvise the equipment to be used in the scenes of an\naccident and several officers of ours have been falling victims of\ncircumstances as results of these accidents,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Betty\nOlive Kamya, the Minister for Kampala called upon police to toughen the\nexisting traffic laws against errant drivers which include cancelling their\ndriving licenses among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere\nare punitive measures which are provided for in the law but are hardly used to\ntake away somebody’s driving permit if that is the job that put food on the\ntable and you take away that permit for six month, he will take that job\nseriously when he get his license back,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She\nurged the Ministry of Education to design curriculum which can impart skills in\nchildren about traffic rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTo\nmake recommendation that proper use and responsible use of the road, awareness\nshould begin as early as possible and also as part of education curriculum in\nour schools,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Different\nreports show that up-to 10 people die every day on Uganda\u2019s roads.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Professional drivers have called on the government of Uganda to put more emphasis on training the traffic police and the public on the post-accident handling of accident victims.
