Officers\nfrom East African Community states have been trained on how to handle dangerous\nchemicals and the ways of dealing with associated effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\n4th Operational Training on Chemical Emergency Response Planning and Management\nfor the EAC States, party to the Chemical Weapons Convention happened at the\nUganda Rapid Response capability Centre in Jinja district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This\nwas carried out by the Czech Republic, United Kingdom and the Republic of South\nof South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
James\nEbitu, the acting PS of Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development noted\nthat even though the East Africa Community region imports manufactured\nchemicals for use in industrial processes, there is need to skill these\nofficers on the associated dangers and risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“These\nchemicals are good for development\nhowever it is incumbent upon the respective government to create awareness that\nthe use of these chemicals needed to be controlled, regulated and this can only\nbe achieved if the requisite knowledge and skills on the associated dangers and\nrisks of these chemicals are well known to us,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nnoted that the officers should also be equipped with the effects of these\nchemicals to the environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\nmust be able to identify and articulate these risks and provide appropriate\nmitigation measures of these chemicals in our region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other\ninstructors vowed to continue to support such \nkind of training in all the East African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Participants\nwere urged to pass on the knowledge attained from the training back to their respective\ncountries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nmain goal of the projects was to develop capacity in all East African countries\nand also to evaluate the gaps in chemical response for each East African Country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
