Kyadondo\nEast Member of Parliament, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi wine has expressed his\ndismay over the increasing abuse of human rights in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His\nremarks followed the story of James Akena, a photojournalist with Reuters, who\nwas brutally clobbered by military last year during protest of free Bobi wine\nin Kampala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Akena\nis currently confined in a wheelchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Using\nhis social media platforms, Bobi wine lamented that freedom of the press is\nincreasingly \u201cshrinking\u201d and called on authorities to better protect\njournalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nsaid story of Akena, who is an award winning photo-journalist with Reuters is\nvery painful and sad for such a person who was carrying out his duty as a\njournalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“For\ncovering the #FreeBobiWine protests last year, Mr. Akena was brutally clobbered\nby men wearing our uniform and bearing our national flag! His pleas that he was\nonly a journalist doing his job landed on deaf ears as he was flogged by men\nwho we pay to protect us!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We\nmust end the wanton abuse of authority and restore the respect of human rights\nin our country,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nsaid the struggle is to end the rampant abuse of authority and restore the\nrespect for human rights in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nnoted the habit of violating human rights and one is left to move freely will\nnot be tolerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bobi\nWine said that never should a normal Ugandan be treated in the way Akena was\nhandled; never.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A\nnumber of journalists have been arrested, severely beaten up by security while\ncarrying out their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\nall the cases, no one has been held accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nsaid when journalists are targeted, societies as a whole pay a price as no\ndemocracy is complete without press freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Harassment\nof journalists is on the rise in Uganda, and freedom of speech is under threat,\naccording to a recent report by Amnesty International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
