{"id":11572,"date":"2019-10-07T09:02:47","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T06:02:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=11572"},"modified":"2019-10-07T09:02:51","modified_gmt":"2019-10-07T06:02:51","slug":"new-appointments-will-ease-case-backlog-judiciary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2019\/10\/07\/new-appointments-will-ease-case-backlog-judiciary\/","title":{"rendered":"New Appointments Will Ease Case Backlog \u2014 Judiciary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\njudiciary has welcomed the appointment of justices of the court of appeal and\njudges of the high court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nJudiciary spokesperson, Solomon Muyita said this will help to bridge the gap on\nthe number of cases that a judge is to handle in the given period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On\nFriday evening President Museveni appointed 15 new Justices of the Court of\nAppeal and Judges of the High Court in Kampala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Museveni sent the names to parliament for\napproval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn\nexercise of the powers vested in the President by the 1995 constitution of the\nRepublic of Uganda and basing on advice of the Judicial Service Commission, I\nappoint the listed below as justices of the Court of Appeal and the High\ncourt,&#8221; The letter reads in parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;The Justices appointed to court of appeal\ninclude; the former inspector General of government Irene Mulyagonja, Monica\nMugenyi Kalegyira who is currently serving at East African court of justice and\nMuzamiru Kibedi, a prominent lawyer in private practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their\nappointments are pending vetting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking\nto the media, Muyita noted Justice Monica Mugenyi has been with them in the\nhigh court whereas she has been away on seven-year assignment at East African\nCourt of justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\nsaid her assignment will end next year and she will be coming back with more experience\nwhich means her serving in the court of appeal will be a good thing to the\nnation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven\njustice Irene Mulyagonja was with us before as the judge of the high court and\nshe has been away on an assignment as Inspector General of government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\nadded; \u201cWe are happy to have her back; we have been expecting her back and we\nare happy that the president has elevated her to the court of appeal. we also\nknow that she has experience and has what it takes to serve in the court of\nappeal,\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another\nlawyer who was appointed is Muzamiru Kibedi from the private practice and he\nhas been in practice for over 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\nnoted that challenges at the high court where 60,000 cases were up for handling\nin one year and out of the 60,000, each judge had to handle 1200 will be\namicably handled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\nsaid with addition of 12 judges the number will reduce to 950 cases per judge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The judiciary has welcomed the appointment of justices of the court of appeal and judges of the high court.
