Uganda National Bureau of\nStandards (UNBS), has acquired the Optical Emission Spectrometer (OES), a\nmachine used to test chemical composition of steel and aluminum metal\nproducts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The machine is able to\ndetermine the number of chemical elements as well as trace metals in steel and aluminum\nproducts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe machine acquisition is\na great step in the fight against poor quality steel products on the market. It\nwill further enhance our capacity to test comprehensively all parameters as\nprescribed in the standard to ensure good quality products on the market,\u201d the\nUNBS Executive Director Dr. Ben Manyindo said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chemical composition of steel is a key factor in\ndetermining the product\u2019s performance in terms of strength, hardness and\nultimately quality of the final product. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new OES, which cost UNBS Shs235 million,\nsupplements the Universal Testing Machine (UTM) which UNBS has been using to\ntest the strength of the steel products. It completes a set of equipment needed\nfor testing both physical and chemical parameters of steel products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00a0\u201cIt was necessary to acquire the OES machine since our investigations have revealed that most of the substandard iron bars on the market also have wrong chemical composition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some manufacturers mark steel iron bars with grades of 500 but after testing, some are found to have grades as low as 300 contrary to what is required by the standard,\u201d Dr. Manyindo said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis machine will therefore enable us to detect such discrepancies early enough to institute the necessary corrective measures,\u201d Dr. Manyindo added.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWith the acquisition of the spectrometer, even the turnaround time for testing steel products will greatly improve thereby facilitation trade and development of the steel sector\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
