The\nDeputy Attorney General, Hon Mwesigwa Rukutana, has advised couples previously\nmarried in ungazetted churches to renew their vows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mwesigwa\nRukutana said that the registrar of marriages is the only office mandated to\nlegalise marriages in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPrayer\nhouses are licensed to conduct and register marriages on behalf of the registrar.\nThe affected couples should repeat their vows before the registrar of\nmarriages,\u201d he said adding that, \u201cthose intending to get married should be\nprudent enough to find out if the prayer houses where the ceremony is to take\nplace is licensed or not\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rukutana\nwas responding to a concern raised by Hon. Betty Nambooze (FDC, Mukono\nMunicipality) on Thursday, 29 August 2019 during a sitting of Parliament\nchaired by Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nambooze said there were reports that marriages conducted between 2006 and 2016 were to be nullified raising fears that families around the country may be affected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe marriages that took place at the Church of the Resurrection in Bugolobi were carried out before this place of worship was gazetted rendering them null and void,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nambooze\nadded that if the marriages are nullified then this would bring problems to the\nchildren in terms of inheritance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf\nthese marriages are cancelled then the children will have problems especially\nwith inheritances where a spouse has passed on,\u201d Nambooze said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mwesigwa\nRukutana said that the law has a provision that covers children\u2019s inheritance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUnder\nthe law, both the legitimate and illegitimate children have the same rights in\ninheritance except for matrimonial property. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
So\nin this case the inheritance will not be affected,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nDaily Monitor of Friday, 23 August 2019, reported that over 1,000 marriages\nthat took place at Church of the Resurrection in Bugolobi were not duly\nregistered because the religious institution had not been officially gazetted\nto conduct marriage ceremonies as required by law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
