The\nState Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Hon Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi\nhas revealed that 623 street children have so far been evacuated from Kampala\nstreets over the past few months despite of insufficient funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nhowever noted that out of Shs3.4billion which the ministry requested to\nfacilitate the smooth running of the programme in all parts of the country only\nShs1billion was released and thus has slowed down the relocation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTo\ndate we have evacuated 623 children from the street of Kampala, urban and\nperi-urban areas in Uganda though the program has not spread to the rest of the\ncountry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nexplained that the reason why the programme is not in different areas of the\ncountry is due to inadequate funds to facilitate the relocation of the street\nchildren. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\nrequested for Shs3.4billion as at June 30th, they released Shs1billion from the\ngovernment coffers for three partner agencies i.e. Uganda Police, KCCA and the Ministry\nof Gender so by this time we still have a deficit of Shs2.4billion required to\nsuitability and maintain the project,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nnoted that for the first time in the history of Uganda, there are few children\non streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\nare destroying temporally residents, the buveera polythene bags in the suburb\nof Kampala where they are renting Shs500 a night, we are destroying them,\u201d she\nnoted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nsaid the ministry has created 139\npermanent residents for the homeless children in different parts of the country\nand the struggle continues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut\non top of that we are trying to excitedly bring on board new activities which\nare meant to excite them to remain where they are, such as sports.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nnoted that the ministry is trying to create the environment that combines\ntalent with school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBecause\nto me school takes priority but you don\u2019t need to get the person from the\nstreet and make a person abandon his or her talent,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nstated that so far 118 children are undergoing intensive sports training in a\nmove to promote their talents in various fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nsaid soon these street children are expected to compete in the Eastern Africa Regional games.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
