Stronger\nefforts are needed to encourage good governance, accountable leadership and\neffective institutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Presenting\na report on Wednesday, 07 August 2019 to a joint committee meeting of Pan\nAfrican Parliament (PAP) MPs in Midrand, South Africa, hon. Jacqueline Amongin\n(Uganda) said improved governance and strengthened institutions were critical\nso as to achieve each goal and target by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTo\nset Africa firmly on the path to implement the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063, the\ngoals of the two agendas must be fully integrated by countries into their\npolicies and plans, national budgets, approaches to investment and private\nsector engagement and development,\u201d Amongin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nadded that efforts should, therefore, be intensified to strengthen the\nalignment of national development frameworks, including budget allocations, and\nbilateral and multilateral development cooperation frameworks with the goals of\nthe two agendas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amongin\u2019s\nreport was out of the April 2019 Fifth Session of the Africa Regional Forum on\nSustainable Development (ARFSD) held in Marrakech, Morocco whose resolutions\nare intended to set Africa firmly on the path to implement the 2030 Agenda and\nAgenda 2063.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nresolutions include improving governance and strengthening of institutions to\nincorporate laws into domestic legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nothers are inclusiveness of education through gender sensitive and transport\npolicies; encourage good governance, transparent and accountable leadership,\namong others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the UN, the SDGs are the\nblueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address\nthe global challenges, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate,\nenvironmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nPAP is considering all options on the table including, hosting an SDG summit in\nOctober 2019 during the plenary sittings of the continental assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nsummit is anticipated to enhance PAP\u2019s constructive engagement with the UN to\nadvance the development agenda and to lobby and advocate for the implementation\nof the Agenda 2063.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe\nkey objectives of this summit are to provide a platform for all national\nparliaments to assess progress made in achieving the SDGs at the national\nlevel, deliberate on expected roles of national parliaments in achieving the\nSDGs,\u201d said Amongin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nMarrakech session which elected Amongin as a member of the ARFSD Bureau. .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
PAP\u2019s\ndelegation to Marrakech also included hon. Assane Marou dit Koubou (Niger),\nhon. Lucia Maria Mended dos Passos (Cape Verde), hon. Sen. Paulette Mounguengui\n(Gabon), hon.
