The\nchief justice, Bart Katureebe has condemned the act of those who attended the\nsentencing of academic and government critic Dr Stella Nyanzi who assaulted the\nJudge during the proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\na letter issued on Saturday the Chief Justice described the incident in which\nunknown persons hurled a water bottle at the presiding Grade One Magistrate, Gladys\nKamasanyu as uncivilised, offensive and disrespectful of the sanctity of the\ncourt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis\nkind of thing is not acceptable\u2026we condemn this kind of hooliganism in the\nstrongest possible terms. We hope the culprits are quickly identified and\nbrought to book,\u201d Katureebe noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nchief justice stated that the judiciary is working hand in hand with relevant\nauthorities to ensure that there is adequate security for all judicial\nofficers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He noted that he has already instructed the\nminister for Justice and constitutional affairs, Kahinda Otafiire to treat the\nmatter with urgency and present it to cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\nhave already asked the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to raise\nthe matter of Court security as a matter of urgency in Cabinet,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the same note, the president of Uganda law society\nPeter Kinobe who is equally concerned about the matter said that the government\nneeds to build a court room that meets international standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nsaid the attack was a violation of the sanctity of court. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We\nhave on several occasions condemned this act whether by government or by\nprivate individuals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nnoted even though the incident was a sign of discontent an attack on the judge\nwas uncalled for and legal procedures must be followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“You\nimagine all of us come up and start fighting just because we are discontented,\nthere are procedures to be followed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nJudiciary\u2019s Permanent Secretary, Pius Bigirimana, also expressed his concern at\nthe assault of a magistrate noting that judicial officers need protection as\nthey perform their duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nnoted that the law gives dissatisfied parties a right to appeal any judicial\ndecision up to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
