Uganda Registration\nServices Bureau (URSB) acting under powers contained in Section 75 of the Copyright\nand Neighboring Rights Act, 2006 as Uganda\u2019s National Intellectual Property\nOffice and the National Copyright Information Center suspended the following\nofficials of the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
These persons are\nthe Chief Executive Officer Mr. James\nWasula<\/strong> and the Compliance Officer Mr.\nDickson Matovu<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The suspension of\nthe above officials is to allow for an effective ongoing Inquiry into the Constitution,\nWorkings and Financial Conditions of the Society in accordance with the above\nprovision of the law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n There have also\nbeen a number of complaints from members of the society with allegations of\nmismanagement of finances<\/em><\/strong> and remittance of royalties <\/em><\/strong>collected\nfrom rights users which URSB would also like to look into critically. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This Inquiry that\nURSB has embarked on is intended to ensure that URSB gets to the bottom of the\nissues within the society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n It is also intended\nthat going forward UPRS will handle its affairs within the strict confines of\nthe law, transparently, with good governance standards as well as achieving the\nobjectives of its establishment in the interests of its members and all other\nstakeholders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Further, in\naccordance with the section 75 (4) of the Copyright and Neighboring Rights Act 2006,\nindependent professional caretakers, Mr.Kabiito Karamagi and Ms. Rita Baguma\nBirungi of Ligomarc Advocates have been appointed in consultation and with the\ncooperation of the Board of Directors of the Society to temporarily oversee the\nmanagement of UPRS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The activities of\nthe Caretakers shall be supervised by URSB and the Members of the Board of\nUPRS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During this period,\nURSB is going to be in constant engagement with all stakeholders and urges them\nto cooperate with the Caretaker. \n\nThe regular activities of the Society are\nexpected to continue smoothly and URSB calls upon all stakeholders and Ugandans\ngenerally to support this process\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) acting under powers contained in Section 75 of the Copyright and Neighboring Rights Act, 2006 as Uganda\u2019s National Intellectual Property Office and the National Copyright Information Center suspended the following officials of the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS).
