Speaker\nof Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has called for increased training programmes in\npharmacy aimed at developing a good reputation for the profession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With\nthe increase of pharmacists and the rise of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs),\nKadaga said that it is important to ensure safety of drugs and value for human\nhealth. This she said can be done through investing in well trained workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There\nare small pharmacies on the streets. If you go to a weekly market, you will\nfind people selling medicine and you cannot be sure whether it is expired or\ndamaged by the sun,†said Kadaga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nwas officiating at the 8th African Pharmaceutical Symposium in Imperial Hotel\nin Entebbe on Monday 22 July 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kadaga\nchallenged the pharmacists to ensure that the profession is integrated with the\ncurrent trends of technology and innovation to be able to respond appropriately\nto the emerging NCDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We\nneed to avert premature deaths by improving access to and use of preventive\nhealthcare services, strengthening health work force by recruiting well trained\npharmacists as well as increase health facilities and stocking them,†she\nadded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nMinister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng said that steps have been taken to\nequip pharmacists with new skills to match the changing health needs of the\npopulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nadded that some of the pharmacists have taken specialized training in emerging\nareas such as management of cancer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Majority\nof those who have undergone specialised training are now employed in the cancer\ninstitute. This will improve quality of\ncare, and assure good treatment outcome and rational use of medicine,†Aceng\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\nher speech read by the Director Clinical Services, Ministry of Health, Dr.\nCharles Olaro, Aceng called for a shift in health policy priorities, strategies\nand increased healthcare spending on NCDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Government\nneeds to invest in research in drug discovery and development that seeks to\nharness Africa’s biodiversity in herbal medicines with the view of extracting\nnew drugs,†Aceng added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nalso pledged commitment by the Ministry of Health in continuing to uphold the\ncause for advancement of pharmacy practice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
